1.0     INTRODUCTION

          Back ground to the study

A survey of the problems influencing the study of Biology in secondary schools in Ekiti, Ado Local Government.

Biology as a study of living things investigate the mysteries of life, unfolds to us the physical and chemical processes involves in the marvelous activity we call life and how plants and animal live in vital relationship to their environment and to each other. One of the outcome of the discipline is the effect it has on those who are exposed to the discipline is the effect as a discipline has been arrogated a number of functions and biology its own has also mate claims about what it can do.

The possession of this type of knowledge when consisted places the biologist in the crossroad of so many professions such as medicine, disease and not pest control activities of genetics in agriculture space crafts construction and space ravels chemical warfare and what have you.

The study of biology interests many because it deals with life but because of it scientific approaches such as practical work and experimentation, many have often abandon it half way.

Pupils are told that food is oxidized to release energy for the activities of and organism, but the possibility of this reaction which may sound abstract is difficult to believe.

To some, religious background may hinder their willingness to accept some biological concepts such as evolution and to other learning of reproductive processes in mammals especially in man is seen to be immoral. The practical work which those with visual impairment may fin difficult to cope with and the ideals and explain combine to make the study of biology difficult.

The study of biology has its relative importance in industry, medicine, environmental protection, agriculture and most essentially in personal understanding of ourselves. Elimination of superstition has emerged as a strong force propelling people to continue in the study of biology. The study of biology also helps in the understanding of what goes on within and around us and hence foster self direction and guidance.

Today, pollution has contribution to the health problem to all life on earth as a result of industrial activities.

These health problems could e solved with the knowledge and application of biological principles. Having indicated some importance of science to nation it is obvious that for any nation to live the good life, it must internalize the principles of biology.

Biology at all levels must e adequately provided for, we must create stimulating learning environment for biological study. The writer takes interest in investigating into those factors that may hinder the successfully study of biology especially secondary schools

1.1    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Generally, secondary schools students find the study of biology very hard to cope with, many of them drop the subject for other simpler subjects. This is of course the reason for poor performance in biology in WAEC and other examination.

Most often, the student are very interested and eager to learn but either due to inefficiency of laboratory or the attitude of the master handling the subject may discourage them from continuing.

At times students complain that the subject is very fast and the periods allocated for it is not enough to do the theory and the practical aspect. This situation that makes coverage difficult, it is at the expense on in-depth attention some of the secondary schools do not have biology laboratories and in some cases where biology laboratories are available they are not properly equipped, the absence of trained laboratory attendants hinder the effective use of the laboratories.

In the recent times there has been an explosion in the number of schools and students and enrolment has risen astronomically especially in biology without a corresponding increase in the number of teachers.

This makes class management and individuals attention difficult most time, students attribute the cause of their continuous failure in biology to their teachers, who may not have relevant teaching experiment most of these unqualified teachers engage in teaching activities which eventually turn out to be a jumble of unrelated activities and an expensive waste of time thus impairing the performance of students.

1.2     THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of the study is to look into those factors that influence biology teaching in Ekiti at the same time recommend solutions necessary for eradication of these problem.

This study is being undertaking to ascertain the reality or otherwise in the claims that few teaching periods the un-proportional number of students to teachers, inadequate provision and maintenance of laboratories and their equipment and teaching of students y unqualified teachers have impaired the performance of students in biology examinations.

1.3     HYPOTHESIS

The following statement were assumed for verification:-

(1)     That most students regard biology as abstract, difficult and volatile.

(2)     That the time allocated to biology is inadequate

(3)     Most schools do not have enough qualified biology teachers

(4)     That the method of teaching biology is generally unsuitable

(5)     Most schools lack sufficient laboratory facilities, trained laboratory assistance and attendants

1.4     IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

For mass popularization of biology as an important aspect of our everyday life activities, it is necessary that adequate foundation in biology should be laid in our secondary schools to make the popularization and learning of the subject interesting.

Biology teachers generally and Ekiti in particular should make pupils appreciate the fact that biology is a means of achieving resistance to disease. Protecting useful organisms and eliminating harmful ones, it also reveals the principles of heredity and production and thus eliminate. Ignorance and superstition about the determination of sex.

The study of biology also provide basic principles for the maintenance of urban and rural environmental sanitation and creates awareness on peoples about pollution and inherent danger in it.

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study was carried out in Ekiti in order to investigate about the problems, factors that are influencing the study of biology in secondary school.

An also to give or suggest some ways by which they can be overcome, with effect to this, four schools were randomly selected and studies.

1.6     LIMITATIONS

This table has some weakness or limitations which tend to impair the reliability of its results.

For instances the small area in which the study was doe is not capable to provide a result that can be relied on, more are considers that only a few schools in that area were randomly chosen.

The choice of these type of approach is caused by limited fund available to the researcher.

Moreover, the indifference and suspicion of some students and their teachers to questions during interviews constituted another militating factor to the reliability of the findings.

There are traces of taking noticeable in the responses but some of the inherent taking which could not be easily identified adversely affects the result.
